Most large buildings built in the last 20 years public and private. Standby generators are an added safety precaution.

Buildings with elevators need emergency generators as a back up source of energy. Also insurance rates are reduced due to emergency lights which stay on in the event of main power interruption.

...it is becoming common to find emergency generators in private homes as well.

There is NO universally accurate answer to this question. The majority of hospitals do, but not even that is always the case.
