AWAY IN A MANGER

Angels peered down upon the newborn infant. While they sang in a multitude of voices, a brilliant light shone from the sky. As it had been foretold, the procphecy of the birth of a Messiah had been fulfilled. Yeshua was the name of the holy child. In the English language, he is known as Jesus. Now the chorus swelled, reaching every ear for miles around. A king had been born! Many of the shepherds who were guarding their flocks were graced by profound, ethereal music. Awestruck, they listened to a message of joy and hope on the long-ago night. Neighing and lowing arose from the stable, giving counterpoint to the words and melody. Gently, Mary picked up her newborn son and kissed him tenderly on the forehead. Ever after, we have celebrated this occasion and the true meaning of the Christmas season. Remember him, then, each time you hear this song.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. "What a crock of ....", thought Alberto as he walked the icy road home from work that Christmas Eve. "Almost three months since I've seen Marta and I wonder if she still feels that way about me." Yet, deep inside, he knew that his finding a job in another state would ultimately help his wife and family back home.

In time he reached his small furnished apartment, where he stood puzzled by the half opened door. Nothing could have prepared him for the sight of Marta and their three kids standing there.

"Alberto, Papacito", were the words that swirled around him as his family rushed to embrace him in a tearful, laughing confusion.

"Marta...kids...how could you afford to come here?" Alberto couldn't believe that he would get a chance to see them, especially at Christmas time.

"No, don't worry, Alberto," whispered Marta as she wiped the tears from her face. "God has provided for us through a gift from a benefactor in our church. Every year he helps a family in need, and this year he chose us."

Reunited by the kindness of a stranger, the joyful family had much to celebrate that icy Christmas night.

"Always take the time to do something you enjoy." When being told this Bernard took out his favourite book and began reading a story about dragons and other various mythical creatures. Andy his younger brother wanted to hear a story himself, and politely asked Bernard while holding out his favourite book, "Will you read to me?" "Yes", Bernard replied, for his greatest delight was making his younger brother happy. In time the whole story was read. Not a word was said by Andy as he listened intently. Away he went happily after having heard his favourite book. Mary his older sister smiled thoughtfully. Andy had told her that Bernard read to him. Nothing could have satisfied either of the boys more. Going to read his own book once more, Bernard quietly sat. Eager once more Andy came to hear one more story by his older brother. Really just one more.

Not my best story, but it entertained me writing it all the same. Thanks!
