Sounds that way doesnt it? When I worked at my first hospital we had a town drunk. Very sad little man. We always called the local police on holidays to pick him up. We took him in and fed him and cleaned him up. The only problem was that he would detox while he was with us and we had no idea what to do so after holidays he was sent back out on the street:(

Usually, in the Eastern Cultures, much respect is paid to the older people, so this surprises me. We have a lot of Asian people in Australia and I always see how kind and caring they are to their parents and elderley.
Broadly speaking, obviously not all of them, the youth of today, have been fed such garbage and violence out of Hollywood,TV and the media. So that is their first problem. They are fed hate and violence, desrespect, ad infinitum.
Next, they have EVERYTHING, most of them want for nothing, (talking about middle to semi upper class families). They have NO yardstick to place ANY values on, and if they have, at home, they are not listening. THEY never went to war, only a small percentage, now in the Middle East, (and they are a totally different calibre to the ones sitting at home on their computers and XBoxes. THEY have to be admired. Respect for any authority is non existant.
It's also fair to say, that a lot of them,(the kids). have parents without an ounce of moral or general behaviour perceptions either. But they are usually the ones that became parents ATER the Nam generation. So what hope do these kids have?
To think that our grandchildren, have to cope with life under this lot, is frightening.
I shudder to think, that this is the next generation who is going to lead the world. Most of them don't know their A.. from their elbow, and they don't care anyway. A lot of them don't even know what sex they are! Go over to the Make-up and General Society section. It's scary.
Every society in history that has taken God out of the equation, self destructed. It is happening now, before our very eys. No spell check done.

Didn't read it, but wouldn't doubt one bit that it IS happening.
The US has a very high percentage of seniors & the disabled caught shoplifting on a daily basis. Not all of them are prosecuted because they prey on the stores where they know they can get away with it....even IF they are caught. Many store owners & security people don't want to press charges on the aged & wheelchair bound criminals that are a BIG PROBLEM in todays society. Those nice little old ladies can pack quite a bit in those oversized handbags & the wheelchairs often have hidden side pockets to conceal merchandise. Add a colostomy bag & not many employees want to do a search of these criminals. Sorry, but it's true. When you know what to look for, you can find it in just about every aisle!

before you jump on the band wagon and say it could never happen here -- remember the 63-67 age group is made up old vietnam vets and teen ages who grew up with a rebel with out a cause outlook -- most use to shop lift - smoke dope and was in gangs --- if the financial situation reverts the wrong way i could see some of my fellow man reverting back to the old ways faster than a new york second!!! these senior are not the seniors we had when we were kids!!!

My observations are, without studying hard data, that yes, the older segments of many society's populations are being more isolated, and under appreciated. The resulting psychological effects are unpredictable.
At one time, elders were respected, and held in high esteem for their wisdom and sound advice. Not so with todays shallow, self gratifying youth, whom, as a victim of media and advertising, despise the aged, and dismiss them as a nuisance. Really very sad I think. It will only get worse in my opinion, Interesting and important subject....

No I didn't read about it, but it sure sounds strange...maybe it is due to the culture they grew up with and the culture they now live in. Strange, and no I don't think it is happening in America.

I wish I could witness this phenomenon. Just imagine old Ms. Anne headbutting a police officer. That'd be great.

I though that oriental people revered their elderly and treated them with great respect. This saddens me.

I read about it. It's probably happening in a lot of places, but hasn't been correlated yet.
