I gave my kid his first cell phone at the age of 15, because at that age he started hanging out with his friends, traveling around the city on the bus and train, the purpose was for in case of emergency and if he needed me he could always call home.of course he uses it to talk to his friends also but we share the minutes each month between my phone and his phone i think that this is teaching him how to be responsible as well.so for the past year this has worked out well.

I also have a strong opinion. My kids got at cell phone when I started giving them mine to get a hold of me. After sports practice, or extra curricular activities at school... I suppose it was about the 7th grade. Hope this helps!

Daughter got one after her dad left us and she had to walk a mile to daycare after school at age 7, which I had a strong opinion about when the school refused to drop her off & they drove her right by the daycare to get to the bus stop. She had to keep it silent and turn it on when she left the bus. Never had a problem with inappropriate use since she started so young and had strict rules.

age 11-12. when they at least reach middle school. in that stage emergency's will be popping up like missing the bus or missing an important project. maybey even bully issues. (hopefully not) also, at that age they want to show it off to their friends and stuff. just make sure the phone is for emergencys only.

I will give one of those "kids only" cell phones once they start school, but I'm kind of a worry wart.

I have to say that it completely depends on the kid and how responsible they are. My son in third grade has been asking for one. He is too young, I don't care how responsible he is. I would say that when the kid can afford to pay for it, they can have one.

I gave my son his first cellphone on his 17th birthday. As part of his present, I paid the phone bills the first year...after that he was on his own.

In all honesty when they are driving then it can be for emergencies only unless they have a job to pay for the extra usage.
