My info is based off of personal experiance...I a not te most up to date computer guy out there. But I have had a love of computers for 14 years and try to stay up to date as money allows. You'd be getting what you need as long as you aren't looking to game. The laptop you are looking at could be easily classified as about 3 generations from the top of the line laptops of today. That isn't saying much since these laptops were top of the line about a year ago. It will do everything you have on your list plus it will play movies and you can make your own CD'sand DVD's. Which since you are in school is a great feature to have in case you do a presentation or something where you need to transfer a lot of information to somebody quickly. Two things to look at though. One, that is the price without a service plan. If you want your laptop to be safe from faulty parts you'll be shelling out an additional $100 for a two year coverage. Secondly, if you have an aditional $200 you can get a lot more up to date laptop at the same store. They would be more up to date in they would have twice the RAM (which makes programs run faster), almost twice the hard drive space (more stuff you can store), and they have better graphics cards (in case you get sucked into the gaming realm in school) Hopefully this info will be helpful with the other contributors to your question

It's good. Buy more RAM from Tigerdirect.com, get 2 x 1GB ddr2 laptop memory. Less than 50 bucks, and it will effectively 1/2 the amount of time it takes to load programs. Further, it is a Compaq (HP) so get the extended warranty if ya can afford to.

If you will be multitasking heavily, you may want to upgrade and add 512Mb or so after buying the computer. 512Mb of the RAM[Random Access Memory] for that computer could cost less than $20 with shipping and taxes included on Newegg.com

Vista is very picky but this seems like plenty of power for those tasks listed

that should do everything you want, but it's a bit heavy to carry around (6.4 lbs) if that's all you want it for. try carrying that much weight around in a bag for a day or two and see how you feel about it.

also the processor is kinda slow, but if you arent using it for games or anything then it shouldnt matter.

It seems to get a decent rating, it's $450, so don't expect to do all those things you listed at once with it.
