During winter the days get shorter. It is not an instant thing that happens on the first day of winter. Setting our clocks back is a theoretical approach to getting more work done before it gets too dark out to see.

The clock change has do to with decreased hours of sunlight, not necessarily the onset of winter. By the way, by your way of thinking you might believe that the least sunlight occurs during the middle of winter, when in fact it occurs on the very first day.

Also, I'm not sure what part of California you are in, but I have been in both Northern and Southern California this week and it was typical California winter weather and was cold in both places. Here in Southern California there is snow on the mountains as I write this. Sorry, but I don't think you're really familiar with typical California weather.

The seasons as we know them are determined by the relationship of the earths' orbit and the sun (or roughly amount of sunlight possible in the day) . the first day of winter is on the day of the Winter Solstice, the first day of Spring and Fall are on the Equinox (quite literally "equal night" )

The winter solstice is when the sun is lowest on the southern horizon and the daylight is the shortest. the summer solstice is the exact opposite. (If you happen to be in the northern hemisphere)

Because the earth's orbit around the sun isn't exactly 365 days, and the rotational access of the earth's rotation wobbles slightly, the times of these events aren't exactly the same each year.

This may come as a surprise to you, but there are other states in the USA. For people in the middle states and in the northeast, it feels like winter came early this year!

even though its not cold, doesnt mean its not winter. maybe the "hotness" in cali could be from global warming. im experiencing the same thing in florida. it normally is a little chillier this time of year but its really hot.

I was told the time is changed so the kids don't have to go to school in the dark in the mornings.
