I crack them out of habit and subconsciously. I really want to stop because it's getting gross but I don't know how.

I used to put a rubber band on my wrist and whenever I caught myself absent-mindedly crackin' away, I snap myself on the wrist. After your wrist gets good and sore, it gets easier to remember ;].

Cracking your knuckles really isn't harmful, buut ff you still want to stop I can give a suggestion. Try holding a hunk of Play-Doh or one of those little squishy toy balls in one hand while you watch TV, sit in class, or whatever. If you can't crack your knuckles idly (because your hands are occupied), you might get out of the habit of doing it.

I had the same habit, I finnally quit! A trick my mom told me was to put glue on my knuckles and let it dry then it feels weird and you wanna...... crap just cracked my knuckle... almost quit...... (con't) not touch them cause it feels weird. I also try putting something sticky, smelly. hot,cold on them or even wear gloves... Its a hard thing to stop...

i stop on my own and it was kinda hard
it will get worst before better
when u feel like cracking your knuckles
spread apart and shake your fingers
when you feel like cracking your knuckles think about how u do not want your hands to look manly in the future and end up with arthritis

I dont really think its a bad thing but really all you are doing when you crack your knuckles is letting the gas out of your joints. That's what i heard!

You should have habits to distract you from cracking your knuckles.

Uh huh i have the same habit/ Just for you information it does no damage to your knuckles if that's what you're worried about. How about before you do it just try and register with yourself- hopefully that'll help kick the habit.

cold turkey! I would say is the best unless its that bad then focus on something constructive that will not form another habit

put a rubberband around your wrist,and every time you catch yourself cracking your knuckles, pull the rubberband so it snaps on your wrist
