I read that some people advertise their site with adwords, and get paid through adsense. Somehow they pay less for adwords than the money they get from adsense.

They get their traffic from adwords for the adsense.

How does this work? How is it that they pay less for adwords?

This may work occasionally, but for most who try it they actually pay more for Adwords than they earn.

Besides, Google is clamping down on this practise. Lots of sites which try it have had their Adsense accounts closed.

It's much better to advertise your site through free channels - directories, relevant mailing lists, etc - and to keep it updated, and write such good content that people find it through search engines.
