The President is NOT more powerful than the other branches of government. There are plenty of checks and balances in place.

While technically there are checks and balances in the American political system, there are many reasons why it seems the president has more power. Indeed, he is an incredibly public figure and the most prominent representative for our country, and for that reason alone he attains cultural capital (power) beyond any other politician or branch of government. Even amongst politicians, the president is often viewed as a leader of their respective parties or of the nation. But that does not mean he actually is more powerful, there are many things that the president cannot do or must have the permission of congress to do (checks and balances). Still, there have been many presidents through out history who have been more powerful than others. In times of hardship American culture has allowed or even sought out presidents who pushed the power of the president to levels beyond the parameters of the constitution.

The pres is not a branch by himself. He is just one person, and yes he is the most powerful man in the USA. But in the leg. branch there are 100 senators and over 500 representatives. Together they are at least as powerful as the president, and when they are united they are WAY more powerful than the president. Same goes for the legislative branch.

All 3 branches are equal. It is not that the President has more power, it is just the 2 branches are not coming together as one and make things happen. The Republicans and Democrats are to busy fighting amongst themselves to form a team and do what needs done for the country. If they would focus beyond their parties, the president would not be able to defeat them.

This president has claimed unprecedented authority. While the Constitution spells out the limits of his power during peace time, it is not always clear what the extent of his authority is in war time. In the past, Presidents with more integrity have asked Congress or the Supreme Court to either define the limits of his authority or to grant authority for specific purpose. Bush however has assumed power by the authority of his own interpretation of the Constitution and in doing so has undermined the responsibilities of the other two branches. These actions, probably illegal by Constitutional definition, and inaction by the other two branches, give him the appearance of being more powerful.

In orderto get anything accomplished, the executive needs the cooperation of at least one other branch--usually the legislative. The president has powers so that the government may act quickly in times of crisis.

The President and both Houses of Congress have their own agendas. The Supreme Court simply makes sure they stay within the boundaries of the Constitution. With Congress controlling the purse strings, and the President with his Veto ability, have to work out a compromise.
Neither side gets everything they want, but each side got something.

The powers are different actually.

Regardless, the president is one guy. It's hard to figure out what the 'Senate' stands for, and harder if not impossible to define any relationship between yourself and that group.

It just seems like the president has more power because he is one person, as opposed to hundreds in the senate and house.
