I agree, i used to work in a shop over christmas as they needed extra staff. The amount of customers that complained about items that were out of stock or that were more expensive then buying online drove me mad! The customers were rude, pushing and shoving other shoppers and they had no christmas spirit!
I'm a nanny for 3 children so they have way too many toys as its their birthdays close to christmas. So their parents put money in their saving accounts for when they are older or one year they bought specail presents from Oxfam online, you can use your money to buy water for a village, a goat for a family or help build a school. I think thats a great idea as a christening present, a lot more useful than something silver!

It's really sad. Christmas isn't suppose to be about getting the best present for you kid. It should be about spending time with your family. It has really gotten stupid. I would never cry over something I couldn't find for my child that she wanted. She would live with it. Don't get me wrong I like getting things but not at the cost of my mother's sanity so I ask for nothing. I would rather give. Some people do give money at christmas. I plan on volunteering with an organization that helps needy kids. With the bad there are good you have to remember that. Not everyone is like the people you see at work. You have to try and not let those selfish b*stards get to you. Just enjoy your family and do what you think is right at christmas.

Well I hate Xmas but I am not as harsh as Robert C. I refuse to celebrate it and have no sympathy for all the people who get in debt on that occasion.
Xmas is the retailers and manufacturers holiday. Period. And in a country that is so intense about calling itself a Christian country I'm amazed at how few people seem to remember what the Christ part of the word Christmas means. Which is why I leave it out and spell it Xmas.
This site is a good place to see how insane it all is with the incredible number of questions about gifts most of which are "what should I give to..." type. Now why in hell would I know what to give to your boyfriend, girlfriend, etc, that I don't even know?

I worked in retail all my life.
At xmas time, we had this huge snowstorm, and our store was trying to close so the staff could get home safely.
Put customers kept flooding into the store. When we finally got rid of them, my chevette was completely buried in snow.
I don't work retail anymore. Customers can be stupid, ignorant, babies any time of the year.
xmas just brings out the worst because it's the most stressful time of the year.
The grownups act more like their kids this time of the year. They push and shove and trample ppl out of the way for the latest toys. They stand in lineups for hours, sometimes even overnight. It's insane.
But not everyone has lost the xmas spirit. It's misplaced for many folks, but when something bad happens, then they get reminded.
You sound like you would do better in a job that is actually about helping the more unfortunate ppl than helping ppl spend their cash. I hope you find a job that brings you fullfillment not stress.
I have. I know spend my days, driving a mentally challenged man to and from his day program. It's the best job in the world, when you see his face light up when we turn in the driveway. He has something to look forward to. And now, so do i.

Any retail job is NOT a fun place to work during the holidays. People do forget what's really important, and I think a lot of people are trying to live up to some ideal picture of the holidays that they have in their head or see in the movies, and the stress of never being able to live up to it doesn't help. Hang in there... and yeah, there are some people who do give to charities too. So focus on the good ones and ignore the selfish idiots!

You poor thing. I hated working in the shops around Christmas, and then there was the Sales afterwards. Book yourself a week off work after Christmas, you're going to need a break. I think that there's too much commercialism. I bought everything in the sales. We do give to the homeless throughout the year too.

I don't blame you for being upset. Christmas can bring out the worst in those who can't see past the material. Last year a parent wrote a letter to the New York Daily News complaining that her 12-year-old child's Christmas would be ruined because she couldn't find an Xbox 360. Boy, in a few days, did other letter writers let her have it! They felt sorry for a kid whose parent feels his/her Christmas is ruined due to no Xbox 360!
You might ask your store if you might put up a coin box near your cash register collecting for the poor or for charity, or a reminder to give to a charity that's collecting for Christmas. Don't forget to contribute to some charity yourself!

It is retarded that they are buying pieces of plastic for their spoiled kids. I'm a broke college kid, so I would give money to the homeless and my church does volunteer with the rescue mission on serving dinners to the homeless which I think is great. I hate how much retail shoves Christmas into our faces and every year it is getting earlier and earlier, like having Christmas decorations up before Thanksgiving!!!

Yeah. precise while capitalism observed a earnings in promises, christmas lost its meaning. the unique meaning of christmas became into to rejoice the delivery of jesus, yet extremely not many people certainly rejoice christmas for the delivery of christ. i think of the christmas that maximum people and individuals of quite a few nationalities rejoice is a ineffective holiday to glorify their materialistic inclinations. i come across it very strange even with the incontrovertible fact that that it does not say while precisely jesus became into born. even with each thing, if he's the messiah, does not the bible make it incredibly sparkling which day he became into born?
