Do not frost your cake while it's still warm... make sure it's completely cooled or you may have breakage or flaking of the cake's "crust" into your frosting.
Also, tie up your hair (if it's long) and have a clean work surface so that nothing gets bumped into the freshly smoothed frosting.

In my house, that would be--DON'T leave the cake unattended on the counter for more than 2 seconds or the cat will get up there and lick the frosting!!

TASTE TESTING!!! I know it's hard...but if you do you will run out of frosting WAY before your cake is coated! =)
