If you pick cheaper countries you could get by on about $1,000 a month, but if you go to Europe you'll need about $3,000 a month.

well, it depends what part of the world your going to. i am from asia so, its cheaper to travel over there. you might need 5000 usd for 6 months and you can have lots of enjoyment for that and thats not including with the ticket. i suggest you to go to philippines, in the place of cebu city. everything is cheap there and just be careful for theft in the city and taxi is very cheap there too. you can pay a taxi drive you for 24 hours for only 40 dollars. just be careful because some of the taxi driver or any transportation driver will take advantage for a foreigner so you have to ask before you ride. goodluck and have fun travelling.

It matters how you are travelling around, silly! If you are jet-setting, it will be lots of money. I have met several Europeans who au pair or do odd jobs in each place they visit so they can have ready travel money. They have been travelling around for long periods of time, and they suggest budgeting when you travel to keep your costs down. Use public transportation, and go to hostels when you can. Not Tarentino's, of course.

1/2 your annual salary (before taxes) for a full year
This is based on staying at hostels, doing a lot of walking, rarely visiting a sit down restaurant(except in the cheap countries), getting cheap flights on ryanair, etc.
It also includes visiting expensive countries as well as the cheaper third world countries.
