Depends on the parents. If there are important family names that eg all boys in the family have the middle name Frederick, but its not a legal requirement. Some people have two middle names or use their middle name as their first.

You don't have to choose one. There are a few reasons to though. Firstly, if you have a common last name, your child may run into people with his/her full name. I'm happy to have a middle name as I've met one other person with my first name as last name - we nearly went to the same University which would probably have been confusing.. but luckily we have different middle names and initials. My middle name begins with an X, actually, so it's unlikely to find another with my full name. The second reason people do it is in case your child dislikes his/her first name, or you name your child after someone whose name doesn't suit your child.

A middle name is a matter of tradition and of originality. If you want your child to have the same first name as a gazillion other people - giving them a middle name - makes their identification more unique to them although there will be a number of people with the same first and middle name somewhere in the world regardless of how unique you think the name is! Also, I think it's a security measure too because if you have a middle name - it's harder for someone to commit idendity fraud and other similar offenses against you.

From a genealogical point of view having a middle name sometimes assists other people to distinguish between family members with similar names. It also is sometimes employed by parents to give a "child" some options later on in life. For example I have a distant relative whose name was Zimri Paul XXX - he went by Paul as an adult. In any event it is a matter of choice. Sometimes people like to make "cute" initials out of names. My father was Oscar Kent XXX and went by O.K.

I think the custom is the first name is one the mother and father like and the middle is to appease or honor another family member such as mother in law , favorite uncle ,sister and so on , but of course its always the parents choice in the end

There is no reason to have a middle name. And if you don't want to give one to your child then in America there is no law against it.
Normally a middle name helps people know the different between Henry Smith and Henry Jasper Smith.

No, having middle name is not necessary ... but most people do have one ... and the middle name is mainly used as a family name. You can choose a first name and then have say, your Dad's name as your child's middle name. Say, if you name your son John ... and your father's first name is Allan...you can name your son John Allan. But, naming your child whatever you want is completely up to you. Good luck to you!

It is your choice. Often girls are not given middle names because they use their maiden names as a middle name when they get married.

It's simply a choice, my dear. Sometimes middle names help to make a name run smoother in my opinion.

It's your choice, there's no requirement for a middle name. It's just traditional.
