yes you will need a filter
i have a male betta in a filtered and heated 5 gallon tank
and
5 female bettas in a filtered and heated 10 gallon tank, and they all thrive from it

the temperature should be around 78-82 degrees at all times and the filter should be on a low setting that doesn't cause to much current

Hope that helps
Good luck

You don't need a filter for a betta. They are comparitively clean and it is even better because you are getting snails. They won't need a whole lot of dissolved oxygen either, they can breathe from the surface. Most snails also require less oxygen. As long as you clean the gravel and do a water change every once in a while you will be great. I recommend getting some MTS(malaysian trumpet snails). These do a great job of cleaning the gravel and keeping it aerated. They are livebearing and can easily overtake your tank, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing unless you can't stand seeing little tiny harmless snails in and on the walls of your tank at night. Good luck.....Gup.
By the way, if you do get mts, you can't just call and ask your lfs(local fish store)for them, they will either think that you are crazy or have no clue what you are talking about. These are not carried by any lsf, but they all have them. These are often gotten from plants that are bought for the store. Just ask for pointy-shelled freshwater snails. They are the only freshwater snail in the world with a pointed shell. They will probably have them and may give you some for free.

You don't have to, but it is always better. You can even get one of those sponge filters for the tank....would keep it cleaner and have air pumping into it. You would still have to do your weekly water changes, but it would be better for the fish.

if u put snails.. then yes.

but no if it is betta only and u change the water every week.

but filters are always a good idea, an internal, or sponge, or small HOB filter will be fine for bettas.
