How do you check anb inginition coil to see if it's working?

The car was starting and running for awhile then stop, now it runs for about 30 seconds and stop. I'll let it sit for awhile then it does the same thing

Pull a wire off a spark plug and hold it about 1/4 away from any ground, if you crank it and it sparks, it's OK. But that's not the prob. I think it;s something simple like a gas filter.

come back with make and model and i can help.....probably nt an ignition coil.they either work or don't. more like ign control module or fuel pump? more input please
