24 hours.......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_rotation

It takes 24 hours for the earth to have the sun in the same location as on the previous day, but during that time the circular orbit of the earth has moved it with respect to the sun, so that it is not necessary for the earth to rotate 360º to have the sun overhead again. The sun also 'moves" a little in the north-south direction during the same period.

The answer of 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds is explained in the source listed below.

The Earth has three simultaneous rotations. Each has an axis
in a slighty different direction.

!) About the N-S pole axis // 23 hrs 58 minutes +-.

@) About its Solar orbit // 365.2 days + -.

#) About the Milky Way Galactic Center > 500,000 years.

The greatest velocity comes from # but everybody else in the "Local Group" has the same # caused velocity so it's like country dancing -- everybody goes left -- right together. Red shift is sort of like ordering an Irish beer from the far end of the barrrrrrrr............... ;- }

the earth takes about 23 hours 59 minutes to have a full spin on its axis, this is what gives us day and night.

it takes 365 days to orbit the sun for the people that said it!

One rotation of a planet is called its "day". Earth is no different.
So your question is really "how long is one Earth day"?
I think you can find the answer to that.
