Balls in a screed mix is common, it normally happens if mixed for to long. A screed mix should be semi dry the consistency should be that of when held and squeezed it holds together. 3 parts sand to 1 part cement no additives should be used. By the way the balls do flattern out whilst levelling and smoothing off.

agreed with top man, just need to practice your timing a little more. A tightass would tell you that the balls are a sign it has been overmixed and will be reduced strength, but don't worry, just get iingredients in there with as close to the right amount of water first, mix for two and a half mins and use. A spray attachment is handy if you want to add a little water as it mixes. you'll get the hang of it.

Some decent answers here. Add a little water to the mixer and let it run. Put dampened sand in the mixer first, let it run a little and then add cement and let run some more.

this is very common ...it happens all the time ..that is why companies that produce it commercially usually use a paddle wheel type mixer ..its normally worst if you mix it with dry sand ..put some sand in and wet it ..add cement then some more wet sand...you will know if its wet enough if you grab a hand full ..squeeze it ..it should remain together ...too wet is as bad as too dry....NOTE never ever use washing up liquid with cement under any circumstances ....it kills cement

goldens answer is good, i might just suggest some water first
do NOT use washing up liquid it is completely wrong, plastisiser is made for the job of making the mix more workable (or lime), it doesnt contain lots of salts nor does it foam as much which ruins the mix. bodger
