Reduce the number of programs running at startup. If this is a Windows XP PC, use MSConfig (Start, run, type in MsConfig, click ok).

you have too many things loading at startup. Anti virus and firewalls will gradual the laptop down alot. in case you have the rest like workplace or different classes that load there little tid bits up then this dont help. Winzip - Qtime - workplace- anti virus - new adaware etc all load a toolbar or plugin of a few type. And there are various many extra.

Maybe there are too many things starting automatically.
You may check the "Startup" in you start menu, and remove unneeded programs.
Skype, MSN, and a lot of things tend to start automatically with windows, you can change this behavior in the Options menu of the corresponding program.

Take a look at what is running. Look in startup and also find a registry checker. I bet you have a lot of adware and unnecessary trash that is sucking the life out of your computer.
Clean that all out and you should get your speed back.
