Vehicles with a diesel engine, on average, get about 20%-30% better gas mileage than a comparable vehicle equipped with a gasoline engine.

Diesel engines are typically more powerful. That is why they are used in trucks and heavy duty vehicles. Much more torque and low end power.

Diesels last much longer than gasoline engines. They have to because they are built so much heavier. This is the result of the compression produced by a diesel engine. While a gas engine might have a compression ratio of 10.1, a diesel engine might have a compression ratio of 18.1. So, the engine needs to be much more durable to handle that force.

A gasoline engine ignites the fuel via a spark, which is generated by a spark plug.

A diesel engine ignites the diesel fuel by compressing air. The heat from this compression is what ignites the fuel/air mixture.

1. Diesel has better fuel economy as it combusts fuel more completely.
2. Diesel engines have more torque than gas engines but seem to get it at lower RPM's. Gasolines in general have more horsepower but less torque....Recently though technology has been upgraded to work on this fault. Not too many stock diesels are going to win a drag race....unless you are dragging a sled...
3. Diesel combusts gas by compressing it until it all blows up rather than a gasoline engine that sparks it at the top of the compression stroke wasting fuel but creating more horsepower (naturally aspirated) and less torque per displacement then diesel.
4. Diesels have been known to last longer if well constructed. The oil in the diesel lubricates the engine better as it runs and the heavier construction of the engine required by the high compression ratio makes them tougher.

Diesel gets better fuel economy, has more torque, and lasts longer. It's the way to go.

diesel engines are made far stronger. diesel get about 25% more fuel efficiency. they also have more torque , but less horse power. diesel requires less maintenance, but more costly when you do.

All the other answers made good points. I buy pickup trucks for the business I work at and almost all times we go diesel.
But a couple of key points, they will make more noise then the gas engine, they will have slower acceleration and they will cost more new. Many times the cost breaks even at about the 50000 mile range, after that you save money.

most5l deisel engines are used for trucks

deisel engines have more torque because they need a high compression ratio soi i can self ignite so the stroke is really long so it has more torque but less hp they last longer they have better fuel economy

diesel engines are very dependable your fuel saving will cover for the higher maintnence cost and they last about twice as long as gas as far as driving it does not take much mod to really sit you tight in your seat
