I was trying to give my plants a little more light since the there is less daylight this time of year (where i live it is winter) and i was wondering if plants can get energy from fluorescent light bulbs?

yes aside from paying big $ for mercury vapor or the like, flouresent provides very close to natrual light. in fact i've even read to supplement high end lights with flouresents. pluss their energy efficient.

Yes. Many offices - including mine - have only fluorescent lighting, but also have healthy plants.
And many indoor gardening setups rely on fluorescent.

All tubular fluorescent lamps are not equal. So-called "plant lights' are made with phosphors that generate the wavelengths of light that enhance plant growth. The same is true with compact fluorescent lamps. If you want plant lights, you will need to buy plant lights. Keep in mind that light bulbs are highly commoditized. That means that manufacturers aim for the absolutely lowest production cost because they know that the market is highly competitive and will force prices to the lowest possible level. They aren't about to spend on the specialized phosphors required for 'plant lights' when producing general purpose lamps for that commodity market.

Yep, entire marajuana plantations are grown this away under fluro tubes called "gro lights".

They can. You'd be best off with lamps tailored
for the purpose. Look for 'Gro-Lights`.
