I believe the antagonist is doomed one way or another in all of the other versions, including the novel, whether he actually dies or not (being the last human on earth).
It was nice that they kept the original title, but they gave no explanation for it, which would have been meaningless anyway, since these creatures were mindless as opposed to the intelligent vampires of the original concept.
I liked the effects in the movie, but felt that way too much was implied (like my own writing style that annoys so many people!). I would rather the plot unfolded as it happened instead of in bits of flashback. Too much atmosphere, not enough plot or action or character development (what exactly was Smith's character and what did he personally have to do with the virus that he knew so much about finding a cure?).
The killing of his dog was reminiscent of Eric Stolz killing his dog in "The Fly II", wasn't it?
Box office figures are misleading and say more about hype and curiosity than about how good the movie is. I'd give it three stars, with reservations.

Me too!!! We see Will Smith(Robert Neville) the whole movie trying to find a cure and then...... BAM!! He has to die to save everyone?! What?! I mean, I really would have liked a happy ending for this one and I wanted to actually SEE the world back to normal not just end with that lady telling about his legacy! Oh well. But ya the commercials are pretty misleading, and those infected people scared the crap out of me! I hate the dark!!!!

And how on Earth was the vial of blood going to save the world?
How were the survivors going to capture the infected so they could inject them?
Why didn't Robert Neville go with Ethan & Anna? He had the chance.
I've spent way too much time thinking about this movie!

We don't think the movie was near as good as the ads made it look. A little weird in places. It bothered us more that Sam,(the dog), died. The ending is ok because he was really starting to freak out. He was not handling being around people very well. If he had made it to the colony, they would have really thought he was strange.

I thought it was good. If he didnt die, it would be a Stephen King movie. Don't get ME wrong, Stephen King is the best writer, but sometimes stories are better when the main character dies.

The ending sucked?!? Try the entire movie. This is a big departure from the book.
P.S. - The commercials sucked too.

The movie followed the book. The commercial was designed to make you interested, not follow the movie.

I don't think that th eending was bad. It just wasn't wrapped up right. They ended the story too abruptly.
