C is direct evidence. When we change the DNA in a bacterium, the bacterium does something different (like make insulin) and the offspring of the bacteria also have that same characteristic.
The other statements are true, but they don't prove that DNA carries the genetic information. D comes the closest because we know that the chromosomes carry the information -- that the "chromosome theory" that we all learn in biology class. But C is the answer.
