Can anyone tell me what sort of polyamide is used in a household carpet and what else makes up a carpet besides the polyamide.

It is often a polyacrylamide.

There used to be a brand name "Acrylan" made by Celanese, that was used for carpet fiber. The polyamide is in the brand name.

Would the landlord be willing to have carpet dyed? I just saw the other day, a two bedroom flat which had pale older green carpet dyed to charcoal grey. Looked fabulous! It took the guy about three hours, he was charging AU$580. He said, he has about 4-5 jobs like this a week. Instead of spending $3000 for new carpet, lot of people opt for this solution, especially if carpet is still in good condition, if place is for rent, or some young couples are renovating.
