Why do people use the drive throughs at coffee and fast food places when there is nobody in line inside?

I sometimes see 12 cars backed up at a drive through windown and nobody inside at the counter. Why do people insist on waiting at the drive through instead of going inside?

I cannot figure that out either. I can see why people use the drive-up for convenience but when you wait through 12 cars, it ceases to be a convenience.

I did hear one time (from an employee) inside a fast food restaurant that he was told to concentrate on the drive-up and make sure they were served first. So if this is the case at other places then maybe those 12 cars get through faster than going inside.

However I do agree with you that it is very odd to see a a long line at the drive-up and NO ONE inside at all.

The American public is an auto oriented society. If they could convert the driver's seat into a privy they might never leave the vehicle except to sleep.
