The general level of employees at McD's can not handle anything complicated like a coupon. Best they can hope for is hitting the right button on the cash register. Good thing it has pictures otherwise they would be up that creek without a paddle.

Actually they do in large coupon books that cost about $50 to purchase but save u thousands in the end.
But I know what u mean....and neither do many other fast food restaurants, like jack-in-the-box and burger king.
Since I have been an operations manager for many of these in franchise stores, I can tell you that the only need to distribute coupons is to increase business at the cost of: what the coupons cost to make and distribute and also the gross $ amount of the value of the coupon. This is not cost effective in the fast food chains because they have tried it and have better strategies today. Such as, their dollar menus, expanding their menu items, and advertising. These things have proven to be cost effective, produce more sales and more profit, and a more loyal customer base.
Franchise owners do at times offer their own coupons and redemptions for their specific stores at times, but overall the advertising issueing of coupons and regulations of menue items are at the sole discretion of the parent company and each franchisee does pay for this service and must abide by any and all its parent company's rules and offers whether they like it or not...and franchisees are inspected from top to bottom monthly from a rep of the parent company.
An example is when burger king offered its big NEW FRIES promotion where u could go to any burger king and get a free pack of fries, one per person. Every franchisee had to give the fries away....no matter what, but they were given a $ subsidey from home office parent company to help offset the cost.

I live in Ontario, Canada and I get coupons in the mail. They often come with 20 or so coupons good for a month. Even still, I sometimes search through my apartment's trash bin to find coupons that other people threw away.

Perhaps the reason McDonald's seldom has coupons may be due to the fact that all the places are franchised operations. They are owned by individuals and it would not be right for the main office to dictate that they reduce their income to satisfy a company mandate. Occasionally you will find a local McDonald's which will issue coupons to be used only at their location. The promotion idea may be suggested by home office, but the offer is that of the operator of the franchise.

It depends on the mcdonnalds, Each one is independantly owned, often there will be 3 or 4 within a city owned by the same group. but where I live, I've seen mcdonalds coupons.
I once got a coupon for a free Icecream cone, i've also seen other coupons.

I have seen coupons for McDonalds, they are usually for any new items on their menu that they need to promote like that chicken ranch club sandwhich they premiered a while back. But, they don't need them, they have "extra value" meals for a reason, they are already super cheap compared to other places.
