You have hard water and you're seeing calcium and magnesium carbonate buildup in your pipes.

Only a few people mentioned the dip tube in the water heater. That is most likely the problem. A lot of water heaters were recalled because of the defective dip tubes would crumble in the hot water tank.

Have you noticed that when you take a shower you only have hot water for a few minuets then only luke warm water? If so you can bet it is the dip tube.

If the water is less than 10 years old I would just replace the dip tube.

Here are some articles that you may find useful.

Sounds as if you have a problem with your Hot Water Heater. Hot Water heaters have an ionization tube to collect impurities to help prevent tank erosion. Sometimes the tubes disintegrate causing small particles to go through your hot water piping. These particles will show up in strainers. Replace the ionization tube. Then remove all strainers from faucets, run water and flush as much of the particles as you can out of system. You may still have problems in smaller valves such as commodes and you may have to disassemble them and remove the particles...

That is mineral build-up in your screen. Run the water without the screen for a few minutes in cold, then run it for a few minutes on hot. Clean the screen off, so the mineral deposits are gone, and then replace it onto your faucet head. You should probably do the same thing for the showerhead, if it has a screen in it, as well. It is preventative maintenance.

Probably from the hot side, because the hot water heater can collect that stuff.. it is from hard water.
you need to flush the lines out because it is full of gunk now.
Probably need a plumber to do that.

It sounds like you have a chalk/mineral problem with your water source. Go to a hardware store and ask for a magnet that prevents most of it from traveling through the pipes and into your faucet.

It sounds like alkalai from hard water. The screen will have to be emptied on a regular basis. And if the plumbing is the old lead pipes, build up from the alkalai will slow the water flow. You might consider a water softener.

Its a calcium deposit. More than likely they have accumulated in your water heater. More than likely, you will need a new water heater.

You must have a well. It's hard water and it's lime. Won't hurt you I've been drinking hard water most of my life. Clean the screen
