Amongst the religious only.

To the rest it's about the children, the decorating, the lights, the music, the cards, the sales, the profits, the atmosphere, the crazy shopping, the presents, the wrapping, the parades, the Santa pictures, the baking, the parties, the booze, the good food, the friends and family get-togethers.

Can't speak for other countries, but in the USA it's a complete societal shift as the whole year peaks in its commercialism, its spending, and celebrating and everybody agrees to it and wants some of it.

You don't have to be religious to enjoy a season that has literally come to represent the USA's time to relax and rest and have a good time and be with friends and loved ones and celebrate life itself.

I'd like to think so. But in reality, the festivities go back to ancient Rome. Saturnalia, the rebirth on the 'Sun'. It is basically a winter solstice holiday.
