The bigger the cell, the smaller the surface area to volume ratio. There isn't enough surface area to exchange all the materials that a larger cell needs.

It's kind of like having too big of a room with too many people in it and not enough doors.

ratio of internal volume to surface area of the cell. cells have to have enough surface area to allow sufficient nutrient/waste exchange with surrounding environment that will support the size of the cell. as cell gets bigger the amount of surface area in proportion to the total volume gets smaller.
