I was there a few months ago but I am going to Scotland in January.

i lived in somerset for 2 years and it was lovely. I lived in a tiny village and got to know a few of the locals. The problem I had was older country people are set in their ways and hate change. They can be very dificult to deal with.
i also lived near Gatwick airport for a year and it was love countryside - the people were not like proper country people and more open.
the advantage on the countryside is you can talk to people and smile without people thinking you are strange.

been here all my life. and i like it... i live on the edge of open countryside... cold grey and wet at the moment, but summer is on its way...
