As a European, I have strong doubts whether the US is a democracy. Remember how Bush got elected in 2000? When we all woke up and realised that the USA is the biggest banana republic in the world?

And don't get me started on the other issues that make honest, law-abiding EU citizens burn the US-flag in the streets in protest. *grrrrrr*.

If there is one thing I can live without it is the US variety of democracy!

This question makes me sick.

Not unless we plan to be the next Master Race, and we know where that leads.

Iraq doesn't "need" democracy.

The United Arab Emirates (our “friends” and “allies”) have NEVER had an election. It is ruled by a Supreme Council of the 5 ruling emirs (hence the word “emirates’). Nobody votes.

And yet, it is the most westernized and liberal society in the Middle East. Women can wear pants, travel unescorted, unveiled and they can divorce (divorce rate is now 48% in UAE). The UAE boasts the world’s largest man-made harbor, the only 7 star hotel in the world and soon, the largest building in the world. They own 20% of the world’s building cranes. Other religions are freely tolerated and society is generally prosperous.

If these Arabs can find a suitable government that works for them, so can Iraq. They don’t need American values and systems shoved down their throat, and in fact would not care to have them.

“Freedom” is a state of mind, not a tangible thing, and means different things to different people.

If we are at risk of attack by residents of this country and our intelligence says we may have a way to prevent American civilians from being harmed. Then why wouldn't we. Also I think everyone should have a chance to be able to complain like we do here in the US. Without having to worry about being killed for it. our democracy is much better than any tyrant or dictatorship

The theory is that since democracies don't war against each other, if all countries were democracies, you wouldn't have any more wars. Sounds like a good plan to me. You got a problem with that?

Sovereignty of other countries must be respected and the US must not force democracy like in Iraq because it will conflict with the religious traditions of the people.

The US should do whatever advances its long-term interests and whose benefits (to the US) outweigh the costs (to the US). As for saintly EU citizens self-righteously burning US flags -- trashing their streets is their own business, doesn't make the least bit of difference to me. However, any administration that views foreign affairs as being primarily a popularity contest dooms its country to decline. If current events are too charged to be evaluated clearly, study distant history: virtually every political leader ever known as "Good", "Peaceful", "Meek", etc. has proved a liability to his people. That includes Jesus.

Hell no... what democracy are you talking about??? The one where we attack countries for no reason.. where politics is a lot of lies by the president.. where torture is suddenly okay?

Is that the democracy you are talking about. We had better get it right before we start preaching to others.

Not just the US, any democratic country, but then most are too cowardly to spread democracy.

Maybe it shouldn't_since every country's people are the one who should decide, first by fighting and getting rid of any tyrant, and then placing whomever they want, whether another one who will become a tyrant, a king, a religious leader, etc.

How arrogant would that be?! It pisses me off that America thinks it came up with the best system of government ever. Hell, it didn't even come up with it, our founding fathers learned it from the natives. Sure, it beats what they had before, but it's not the best, just the best they'd seen, and it's not for anyone to go forcing on other people, that's hardly democratic in itself, now, is it? Hypocritical. Arrogant.
