You are right and you are wrong. The wee creatures are one of the sweetest gifts God gave us. But they are only one of the gifts we have. The others are as varied and as good as a dog in the family. Some are greater but not many.
Our souls a gift so great that no other creature but God's Holy Hosts have it; is greater than the bodies we hold tight to in this life. Our lives are greater than a dogs. The human should have the greater respect " as a whole ". There are some men and women who do not deserve this respect, and many dogs who do deserve more respect than these inhuman humans, but that is all on a case to case basis.
You are right ...these companions we are the stewards of deserve a hell of a lot more than we as a whole treat them with. They are dear and can be the most faithful friends. I find it disgusting how some men and women treat dogs, as well as other creatures of God's domain. But I find some solace that in the end? God will judge and those who have abandoned their stewardship to the point of cruelty will pay.
I will always love the dogs and they do get my respect but ultimately I have to place God's children above and before them. After that all animals I come into contact with are given the respect they deserve but the dogs? Well ~ " Dogs rule man " !!!!!

Now for the Secular POV. Dogs are simply another warm blood mammal along side us. They seem to be a 'gift' simply because Humans are higher on the evolutionary chain, but aside from opposable digits, consciousness and walking upright, there isn't a great many differences between us, and should be repsected out of the same respect we have for any other creature, but speciated there is no reason for them to be respected more than our peers, though I admit sometimes the calm silent companionship of a dog is more comforting

A dog should be respected for what it is. Likewise, a human.
A dog, in its unconditional love, would never disrespect a human. So if you want to emulate the unconditional love (and respect) of a dog, respect humans. And dogs.

This may not be a particularly warm and fuzzy answer.....but I think it has the advantage of being true:
With greater intelligence comes a greater capacity to be an *** in countless inventive ways.
Dogs simply arent smart enough to be jerks. People are---and some take full advantage of that ability.
