Maria is one of the world's most beautiful names. It stems from the Hebrew name Miryam, which means darkness or bitterness (mir)over the water(yam-ocean). It is the name I gave my daughter and she has always been happy with it.

Not particularly - it's pretty, but nothing exceptional to me. I think it's just that Maria is so popular, kind of like Marie is for a middle name. What about Marina instead? There's only one extra 'n', but it's a bit more modern and uncommon. Even Mariana, Marla, or Marigold would be nicer.

Maria, although common, is a very pretty name for a girl. That and Marie are my two favorite variants of Mary.
