I have an 18 hour flight to China in about 4 days and I wanted to sleep on the plane to pass the time and help with jet lag. I have a hard time getting to sleep on planes; so I was wondering what a good over the counter sleep aid would be? I've taken DIphenhydramine HCL, and it hasn't seemed to really work at all. Thanks!

Try not sleeping a day before the flight so you'r really tired, then sleep half way during the flight...listen to some calm music or any music that you like too.If your ears pop when the plane goes down, the best thing to do is to be sleeping,i was sleeping once when the plane was going down and i woke up and i didn't feel a thing!

diphenhydramine is benadryl- and a normal theraputic dose is 50 mgs. You may just need to take more than the box specifies. Drink lots of water, lay off the alcohol even if it is free, and use a saline spray in the nose and eyes to help protect your mucus membranes. If you are over 40 you might want to take an aspirin before boarding to help prevent blood clots in your legs. Exercise as much as you can between sleeps for the same reason.
enjoy yourself!

Try Valerian root it is herbal and relaxes you. It's also good for stress headaches. You can also get a Melatonin supplement too. I use both together about 30 minutes before bed to relax when I can't sleep. I should also say that the Valerian does have a bad odor but doesn't leave after taste. It will also make your cat go crazy like catnip, lol. My cat runs to the bathroom cabinet when he hears me get the bottle out of there.

Valium is tried and true, but not OTC. If you have decent insurance, prescription meds are sometimes actually cheaper, and docs will hand you a Valium script for a hangnail these days.
