...well, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Psycho", "Silence of the Lambs" and "Deranged" were all pretty good, and they were all based (...or at least partially based) upon the real-life exploits of serial killer Ed Gein...
..."Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" was directly based upon the murderous rampage of actual seriel killer, Henry Lee Lucas...

one that comes to mind, even though I have not watched it yet is The Girl Next Door which was released on dvd on 12/4.. It's based on Jack Ketchum's book, which was inspired by the case of Sylvia Likens. I know the book was rather horrific..
and before anyone says it.. this is NOT the comedy movie released a few years ago starring Elisha Cuthburt.

Supposedly the Amityville Horror was based on a true story but it was proven false.

I think Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are based on true events. I forgot the serial killers name, but there was a dude who was obsessed with his mother and hated women. He killed them and made things with their skin. Check wikipedia.org or even do a search on the movie Psycho and it will give you more info.

Texas Chainsaw is NOT based on actual events. It was loosely inspired by Ed Gein's exploits. Very loosely. As in, Toby Hooper read about him at some point and decided to make a movie that wasn't about him, more or less.
