I went in to get a new battery installed, and when I was driving home I noticed the spedometer wasn't working any more. It worked on the way there. Could the guy installing the battery have done something to screw it up?

Take it back where you had the battery installed and let them know about that. I am presuming that it was working fine before the battery replacement.

If you have a mechanical speedometer, then the battery shouldn't have had anything to do with it.

Since it happened when you picked up the car, you should have immediately returned the car and told them about it.

Now the shop will say it was working when you picked it up. Most likely the meter will have to be replaced with a new one. There are some shops that will repair them or have new ones that they can set the mileage to the orginial setting, so that the mileage is correct.

good luck

Either the return spring on the speedometer is broke or the balance in the back side is broke, you will need to replace it and record the old mileage for dmv purpose

It depends on the year and make of the vehicle. Is it an electronic or mechanical. If it is electronic, then they could have shorted it out. If it is mechanical from an older model, then it is not likely they broke it.
