I live in North Carolina, and it seems that geese live here year round. Some people have even built nesting areas for the geese to stay and breed.
When I was a kid, I would see geese heading south when the weather turned cold, and only stopping to rest for a short time. Now they are so abundant that some businesses hire people with boats and dogs to run geese away from nearby ponds.

Living in Canada, I see many flocks of geese making their trip south for the winter. Last year, with a milder, warmer weather due to global warming, I was very surprised, on Christmas Day, to see flocks of them returning home from the south. I wondered what they would have done when the unseasonably milder weather became very cold again in January. So, normally, they fly south for the winter and stay there until the thaw occurs.

They seem to go south to North Carolina........so a little bit of both!

Actually the geese here in NC prefer to stay all year round. Must be a billboard in Canada that says Visit North Carolina

You're kidding, right? I think most all
animals want to fly or walk towards
the south where it's warmer in the winter.
In the summer, it's warmer in the North,
then in the winter, it's warmer in the
South. that's why all of us fashionable
folks want to head for the South.

When people start feeding them they don't go anywhere just hang out for another hand out. They are all over Oregon and Idaho during the winter months, years ago you never saw a one during the cold months.

They go south, I love to watch. You can usually hear them, before you see them coming. They are all flying in formation and honking away. I just stand and stare it is such a lovely site.
