I did that this past spring. My grandaughter and I caught them in the back yard. She was so cute. She would follow one closely with her hand spread wide open and then not have the nerve to grab it. What was so funny is that each time she did this she would wipe her palm on her jeans as if it were dirty and she had not even touched the bug. She turned 4 in Sept

I used to live in San Francisco, and would catch lightning bugs in the backyard. I love them, would put them in a jar with little holes cut out on top, I guess so they could breathe. Let them out in the morning. No I never heard about the ring thing, and would never want to do that.

Didn't know about the 'ring' thingie...and if I had known, I'd never have done it. I LOVED lightning bugs...:-)

For some reason they seem to have all but disappeared from this part of the country. I seldom see them. Are they more prolific in the south? [which is where I was living then]

I live in the north where there aren't any lightnin' bugs. I did get a chance to experience them once when I was a kid and we took a trip to Arkansas. They were so cool!! We just caught them in jars. I didn't even know that you could make a ring out of them. I will have to ask my dad. It will make him chuckle!

There were six kids in my family when I was growing up on the farm. Many summer nights were spent outside catching lightning bugs. I would always put them in a jar, and poke holes in the lid when I would catch them. Then release them in the morning....hoping to re-catch them the next night.

I loved to stay out and try to catch lightening bugs, but of course I had to be in my yard. I did make rings out of them, I don't remember how, but I do remember I had to pull something off! oohh..that sounds disgusting...and mean now that I think of it.
WHAT WAS I THINKING!! Poor little bugs! Oh, I know, I pretended they were fairies! And you know what I have not seen any of those in a long time..what happened to them???

I never saw lightning bugs until I moved from the west coast to the east coast as an adult. They're one of my favorite things about summers in this part of the country.

catching lightning bugs! What a memory! I always loved it when my parents let me stay out just abit longer to catch them!
I'd put them in a jar-put some grass in it--punch hole in the lid with a can opener--and put them on my dresser to gaze at when I got into bed.
My parents ALWAYS made us let them go before we actually went to sleep. I wondered why until I got older and understood their reasoning!

I used to love that, I don't see them near as much anymore here in GA, I think I only saw them once or twice last summer....that sure was fun. Last time I saw them I thought I was hallucinating or seeing stars.
