We eat last years crop that has been canned or stored in the freezer. Canning is not like the cans you buy in the store. We use mason or ball jars to can fruits and vegetables. Our root cellars or storm shelters as you might know them by are used to store potatoes, apples, pears, onions and other root crops or stone fruits. When we harvest our gardens our families get together to can the produce. Then we all take home our share. Today many prefer to freeze the produce and store it in upright freezers. Most don't store all in the freezer because it is risky. Most meats are processed in the winter when spoilaged is less likely. Hams and bacons are cured. Meat is stored mostly in upright or chest freezers these days. Larger farmer's dont have the time to can as much as they use to. Most still grow their own gardens because farmer's prefer to know where their food came from. We all enjoy eating what we have grown from the sweat and toil of our own hands and the bounty God has blessed us with. I don't know many farmer's that are atheists. I don't get food stamps and farm subsidies are getting scarce these days. When all of us family farmers are gone and the big coroprate farms finish taking over I hope you can afford their prices at the grocery store. Maybe those of you that bash the farm program might want to take a look at where the money in that budget is being spent. But don't worry. We won't be around much longer to bother you. I pray for you all. God bless you.

Starred. Great question.

In Medieval times they had to make the last year's harvest last until the next harvest. A lot of farmers went hungry waiting until the next time they could fill their stores.

I guess it's the same now but instead of having to store the food, a farmer has to make his profits from the last crop last until the next crops. They'd just buy groceries from the money. Of course, they'd supplement it with vegetable gardens and such I'd imagine.

Many farmers can their vegetables for future use. The others use the money from selling crops to buy what they want/need.
