Space research has brought a lot of benefits that have nothing in particular to do with space. Velcro and Tang are two examples (though Velcro is probably more exciting).
A man may never land on Mars for several reasons:
1) It'll cost a ton of money that nobody has.
2) Radiation might kill him on the way there
3) His crewmates might kill him on the way there
4) It'll be hard to get him back.
