Me TOO! That was not just a different time but a different world huh? I remember playing outside with my friends all the time, in snow or warm weather and begged to stay out till it started getting dark!! Those were some great times!! Thanks for the memories!
My kids were often out in the neighborhood in the summer, but the rest of the time I had 5 - 10 kids at my house as my two were 15 months apart. I liked it though, I always knew what they were doing and didn't have to worry! There friends were great kids too!

I'm thinking you are in the wrong Seniors... we didn't have street lights!!! That's a relatively new thing! Even now I'm so far out in the country that there are no street lights! My kids had to be home before dark... PERIOD!
Well, that's not entirely true, the new neighbors had one put in, on my pole no less... why they didn't use their own pole I don't understand... I don't like it I can tell U that! and as soon as I can sneak down the road with granddads 22 it's a goner! I've Been watching CSI... the glass must be blown towards my house not away!!!

It is likely to be a combination of both a timer and a light sensor. This means that the lights cannot turn on until it is late enough in the day and dark enough and then if need be they can be turned off by the timer during the night. This saves power and makes it darker to help people sleep if they have one of these lights right outside their house. The timer will then turn them on again in the morning but only if it is dark enough for the light sensor to be triggered as well. This design ensures that the system can cope with the changes in the hours of darkness through out the year.

That was the universal signal in my neighborhood. As soon as the street lights went on, whoosh, all us kids ran home. I applied the same rule to my kids, but at a little closer routine. either I or the wife would be with the kids outside keeping a watchful eye out.

I had to be in "before" the street lights came on. If I was out on my bike, I had better have my bike in the garage, garage locked, & be in the house "before" the street lights came on. I knew what would happen if I wasn't home on time, so I made sure I was.

That definitely was the time to be in! Didn't need to be called or need a watch, it was the street lights that told us to go home.

I didn't when I was a kid. I grew up in a town with a population of about 2,000. We played hide and seek in the dark on our street and in the summer stayed out till 9 or 10 pm.....sometimes. My kids grew up out in the country in that small town so they did not have these rules either.
