I have heard conflicting reports. One said 1 minute and the other said 10 seconds. Which, if any, is the correct answer? If you are running into a store and you know it will be less than 60 seconds, should you leave your car on or turn it off to consume less gas?

I shut down the car when i go into the store (for many reasons). I usually don't turn the engine off on the trafic intersections as that would wear out the starter prematurely and also the battery... and if everyone did that, the environmental impact recycling all those batteries is greater than the extra oil burnt... my opinion, but i might be wrong.

If you leave the car unattended, then shut it off and lock it up. That is more for safety and security than for any other reason.
As another has said, if it is a turbo engine, then let it run for about a minute just to let the turbo spool down while oil is still being pumped into the bearings.
If you are at a traffic light, leave the engine running. This is again more for safety than the gas savings. Sometimes cars won't restart for different reasons, then you have the intersection blocked while you try to restart.
I will shut down the engine, if I'm stopped by a train. Some of them are rather long, and there is no sense wasting the gas while I'm sitting for 5 minutes or more.

Turbo cars should run about a minute. other it really doesn't matter.
