other than loyalty.
besides, what if you are a conservative person about your thoughts and feelings, and you're not much of a "speak out" person...how do you determine your best friends?

one thing that i have learned and stood by it all this years i never ever shoved my opinions and ideas to any of my friends.

another thing that i have learned do not let any expectations of any sort come between friendship, that word or the act it self
ruins everything.
now friends do argue and fight that is the spice but the key is
to agree to disagree and to realize if and when you do not agree with your friends do not toss them aside just because they do not agree with you.

another thing that i hate passionately when any accusations rises up and jeopardizes everything the trust the love.

so a good friend would give the chance and time to try to clear up things, it means if you care enough you would do that for your friend.

another words take them, as who they are and just love them.

this is how I treat my friends, unfortunately some would not bother to see or feel what true friendship means.

If you know that ure friend would go to the limit for you then she/he is ure best friend.. if you KNOW that no matter what decisions you make she'll give an honest opinion then she is your best friend. If she doesnt judge you for your conservativeness and makes you feel happy and proud of your self then she is your best friend. A friend can have loyalty but a best friend has that plus the ability to make you laugh every time you see them .

Good question........as the ones you have us used to .

In my particular case...I have lot of friends but only 2 "best friends"
With one of them, we know each other from all our lives, even bornt in the same month, and same year. the other one, is my friend for the last 20 years. With both of them, I have shared good and bad moments.
It is not only one thing that makes best friends, as Aussie said is a combination of several things.
Respect, loyalty, friendship, trust, care, support, and to be always "there" for the other person when she/he needs us.

Time determines who are ur true friends.
No conditions. Only love from both sides no matter how & who they are.

you do not need to talk when around a good friend.

It is a feeling of well being generated by trust, confidence and reliability
