I have loaned money to several family members but when it comes time to repay me the money never seems to be available. When am I going to get the message. I would rather they say give them money for free then say the word borrow. To me a loan is just that, a LOAN! Friends, on the other hand tend to pay me back for reasons unknown. Why are family members flakes with loans but yet friends are more responsible. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Oprah said something that she has done when her friends or family asked to borrow money. If she had it she just gave the money to them. Then if they didn't pay it back it wasn't a loan and it wouldn't ruin the relationship! This was years ago i heard her say that before she REALLY had the money1

This has a split answer.... in a way yes, cause you want 2 help, but in a way no b/c that is like on the top 10 of ruining a relationship.
There isnt nothing I wouldnt do for my family or close friends, however I myself would never borrow $ from them. Parents, are different. LOL

I would say loan money to family or friends only in cases of dire emergency ( if you have it to lend) and count it as gone, never to return to you. I speak from experience. There are circumstances that arise when you "must" help out if you can or forever feel guilty.

I always loan money to friends and family. Thing is you need to remember that chances are you won't get it back. So actually I give it to them.

Family for sure, but friends, it depends on how much, $20 to almost anyone, but if we are talking a lot of money, it really matters how well I know and trust the person.

Friends - would have to be exceptional person.
Family - have loaned to my son, and that went well. Have refused to loan to nephew who then would no longer speak to me. Oh well.
