Ignorance is not the same as stupidity.
So, ignorance is blissful, because you don't know or have that bit of information yet, so how can you react to it?

Not knowing something is often more comfortable than knowing it. This proverb resembles “What you don’t know cannot hurt you.” It figures in a passage from “On a Distant Prospect of Eton College,” by the eighteenth-century English poet Thomas Gray: “Where ignorance is bliss, / ‘Tis folly to be wise.’”

The above answers do indeed describe the meaning of that common idea. However, people often THINK that ignorance is bliss but in reality what you don't know can harm you a great deal. Ignorance in certain situations is actually more stressful and confusing.

Education is actually blissful but laziness appears more attractive so people tend to go with that. Sure too much knowledge can be a problem too as with anything taken to extremes but I'd rather pin my hopes of happiness on education than on ignorance.

'Education is bliss' doesn't sound as appealing but it is probably a better guideline. The 'ostrich approach' (hiding your head instead of dealing with the issue) is appealing but problematic.

Hey!

Ignorance is bliss just so happens to be one of the most ignorant sayings there is. What it is supposed to mean is that what you don't know, can't hurt you. Sort of similar in meaning as see no evil, hear no evil, know no evil.

The reason I hate all THREE of those famous sayings, is because just because you don't know it, certainly doesn't mean its not there and isn't willing to reach out and hurt you in some way. For instance, if you are ignorant of STDs, does that mean you can't catch them? No, but it DOES mean you won't worry about catching them before hand. In fact, that ignorance makes you more likely to catch an STD since you don't take preventive measures. So you're left with no worries, but still problems.

Another quote, or saying that I happen to like is 'Ignorance isn't bliss, it's oblivion.' I don't remember who it's from, but it is much more honest and real than 'ignorance is bliss'.

Luv ya,
Tashi :)

A person who's ignorant to something isn't dumb; they just don't know about that particular issue. Not knowing means not having to worry about it or be troubled by it.

if you have watched the movie "Paycheck" you should be knowing this by now.

There are somethings in world that is better if not known.

For example, if you know that you are going to die tomorrow, then you will be worried and wont do the things that you would have done otherwise.

If your ignorant you don't worry about things because you are not consious of them. It's blissful not worrying.
