I'm not going to lie, I laughed when I saw this question. The first thing it made me think of was, "Well then did God want to encourage cannibalism because people are made out of meat too." I'm not trying to make fun of you, it's just the first thing that popped into my mind.
I don't think that god doesn't want us to eat animals, people are omnivores by nature, just like bears.

and why are they so good with mashed potatoes and gravy??? We eat meat because it is required for our nourishment and pleasurable flavor. If someone doesn't like it they aren't forced to eat it and shouldn't force others not to... 1Co 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 1Co 6:13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. 1Co 10:25 Whatsoever is sold in the meat market, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: 1Co 10:26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof.

Since when didn't god want us to eat animals? It's personal choice, surely.
To be honest, if there is a god (athiest, sorry,) he probably did want us to eat meat, otherwise why would other animals, such as lions survive on it?
