According to several southern Baptists I know, one of them being a minister, there's a Biblical passage which I, myself, have read about Noah being drunk, sleeping in a tent. His son Ham entered the tent and "knew" of his drunken father. God punished Ham for this by making his descendants black.
Would this be fair for Romney to discuss, or is it off limits to point out Biblical roots for racism and slavery?

Sway- True! I've often wondered about that one myself. I also read a quote from a muslim cleric claiming that blacks dance all the time because the heat of the African sun has made them genetically predisposed to delirium. Hard to pick a religion when they all insult you.

I think it's fair. Huckabee started it, so Romney should finish it. But in all honestly, the mature thing to do is to laugh it off and let it go.

Hm. I looked up Gen. 9:20-29, it says Ham (father of Canaan) saw his father naked and told his brothers, who then backed into Noah's tent with a cloak to cover him. Apparently Ham made fun of Noah quite coarsely to incite such response like cursing Canaan to be servant to servants.
Nothing about "knowing" Noah in there according to KJV.
Nothing about cursing Ham's children to be black, as if that were a curse.
Huckabee was responding to a NY Times reporter re: "Is Mormanism a cult or religion?" H's first statement was that he wasn't sure, then asked the Jesus/Satan question. In context, while still suggestive, it's not the jab the media plays it out to be.

If simply being black is a curse (I am a Christian) then why would Moses marry Zipporah, a black Ethiopian woman? In fact, when Moses' sister Miriam criticized Zipporah, she became whiter then ever- with leprosy!
The issue with Noah and the descendant in question, who is Canaan, is more about fathers properly teaching their sons that racism. You just have to study within the correct historical and cultural context.

This is not fair. The Southern Baptist Convention formally renounced and repented for slavery and racial supremacy in 1995.

While I am Mormon, in defense of Baptists let me say that very few Baptists would believe this doctrine. It was a common belief of southern protestants in the 19th century but has now (thankfully) fallen out of favor.

Hmm, thats interesting considering there are many southern Baptists who are blakc.
The issue comes down to interpretation, there are so many things thast get interpreted and we arent really sure that something was not "lost in translation". These books were not originally written in English, so you never know what the original text actually said as many times things dont translate directly.

what does that have to do with it. yes the bible said that. but that has nothing to do with racism or slavery. nothing at all. so go on have a debate on it. what does that have to do with being the prez. the mormans made up there oun bible. that would fall under adding and taking away from what has been writen. that is what we should be talking about here.
