I've gone through this a few times over the past few years.

1 - go to the Symantec website (www.semantec.com) and you can find instructions for removing the software.

Once you have followed those steps, you should be okay to go. However, if you install another anti-virus software, the leftover Registry Keys from Norton MIGHT pose a problem

If that happens, you will need to edit your Registry and search for anything that shows either Symantec or Norton and delete those entries. When you're done, restart your system.
Don't do this unless you run into a problem trying to install new anti-virus software.

Good luck.

Go to the Norton site, some where on the site is a tool that will remove all of the Norton left on your computer. I did it 4 years ago.
