No world left!? Where did we flee off to?! I would try to teach some history so that we don't repeat our mistakes, but you know how kids are; they HATE history...';)

Any values for the future that you could teach them would have to come from the world that you came from. Where else could they come from?
And even if you avoided telling them about the world that had been destroyed, in an effort to prevent the recreation of the destructive aspect of that world, everything that you did would speak of that world, because that's where you came from. And they would want to know about where they came from, and what had been. You couldn't not communicate about the past, even if you tried. Your silence would speak volumes.

Well, first of all, its not going to happen. The mathematical portion of my brain will discount all apocalypse theories of only one survivor.
If there will be survivors in one continent, there will be several.hundreds in another, or thousands in another.
It will be several hundred years before man will even get back to the education part. You will have to get past the survival part first. It will be very easy to lose what you know now, if all books got lost, and all writing paraphernalia is gone. It will only take the first hundred years to do that.
Maybe there had been other civilizations that happened several million years ago and it got erased by extinction grade wars and meteor hits. Different cultures constantly repeat stories of other civilizations, Atlantis, etc
You could write a book.

Why is this an "or" question? I would teach them "of the world that I came from and what it was like AND teach them values for the future."

Assume you not made sterile by a Nuclear Apocolypse what needs to be taught to future generations is Just because you can make a weapon doesn't mean you have build it, and that they shouldn't listen to warmongerers, preaching war, Lawyers, and people claiming to be the Messiah because after an Apocolypse there would probably be alot of religious nut survivors forming groups with their leader as the Messiah.

assuming that there was you and another person of the opposite sex left, your question you ask would be moot because the survival of your offspring would be unlikely,no meds,no docters and extreme hardships,it would take thousands of years for the new population to multiply enough for crime etc to be a problem and by then your teachings would be long forgotten

Are these not one and the same? The values that were not upheld and led to the demise of the world as we knew it are exactly those which, if taught properly, would serve to safekeep their future.

That seems like the right place to begin. Relate the history of the world to the best of my ability. Compare the successes and losses. Focus on how peace evaded us, how to best guard it so we'll be able to keep it.
