The age where formal study is appropriate can vary by as much as three years but generally it is around age six. (pre-school is exactly that, not really school but a preparation for school) There are several factors including social, developmental and educational reasons.

First of all the child needs to be toilet trained and socialized to the point where the child can function in a group setting and allow the teaching-learning game to happen.

Secondly, around age six or seven is when the brain is developed to the point where abstact thought is beginning to take hold. Up to that point only concrete thought is possible in most children.

Learning language requires at least a little bit of abstract thought ability. Children actually start hearing sounds and associating that with language even before they are born and while a great deal of language development happens in the first two years of life, the formal study of language and other subjects is not really feasible until the child has developed somewhat more. .

Also around age six or seven is when children start to break out of individual play patterns and start to be able to do parallel and perhaps even group play. This means that the ego development is to the point where they can function in a group.

Honestly, I believe starting school is aroung the age of 4. That's when I started and it's really cool because you can graduate from high school at an early age and be able to get through with college earlier.

I think 4 or 5 because they need to communicate and learn. If they don't start school, where would they be? home? doing nothing? The more they learn in school, the information they have. But you have to pick the best school for kids. make sure kids are well-behaved (not bully), no violence occured, good eduaction and teachers. Those who start school earlier tend to be smarter than those who start school late. After school, review notes with them. make sure they don't forget. Hope I helped! :)
