The Kite Runner- In which ways can Amir be considered a hero in the novel?

i think we can all agree that Hassan was a hero in that he demonstrated unconditional love and loyalty and silently sacrifices himself for Amir.
While Amir is the coward he does try to redeem himself-- so in what other ways could you say Amir is a hero?

Amir is heroic because of his faults, not despite of them. Hassan is too good to be true, too heroic to be a real human being. He is more of a two dimensional character than a real person of flesh and blood. Hassan’s loyalty and self sacrifice is endearing and warms the heart, but it is Amir’s journey to redemption and his quest “to be good again” that makes him heroic. As erring human beings, we can all relate to his sins, his guilt for his betrayal, and his attempts to expiate his sins. The fact that he felt that he didn’t share his father’s blood because he lacked his courage and pride makes him all the more heroic when that courage and inner strength show during his quest to save Sohrab in an attempt to “be good again”. It is our faults that make us human, not our perfection. The quest for perfection is what brings out our heroic side.
